Dumortierite [ Al_6.5-7BO₃(SiO₄)₃(O,OH)₃ ] is an Aluminum Boro-Silicate Mineral of the orthohombic system.  It typically forms fibrous aggregates of fine prismatic crystalline structures.  Inclusions of Iron cause color variations from the normal blue to purple to a color of pink to brown.  Dumortierite is named for the French Paleontologist Eugene Dumortier (1803-1873), who first discovered the stone.  It is mainly used in the manufacture and production of the finest  porcelain.  With its coloring and look, it is commonly substituted for Lapis Lazuli and is often mistaken for Sodalite.  All three of these gemstones have a very similar look so be careful when purchasing stones that you are actually getting what you are paying for.

Emerald is a variety of Beryl [ Be₃Al₂(SiO₃)₆::Cr ] which has trace inclusions of Chromium and at times Vanadium which in turn gives the Emerald its beautiful green cast.  Emeralds can range from the yellow to blue spectral scale, with green being the most prevalent.  The origin of the name is found in the Semitic word izmargad as well as Sanskrit marakata meaning “green”.
